In the first of many annual releases to come, it was an honor to have tenured artists contribute with previously unreleased material, whether it belonged to an upcoming album (like Fiorella16's "Nulle Part"), or an existing track that had never been made available digitally, such as Israel Martinez's beautifully cacophonic "26clasicosen1". Others, like Rodrigo Ambriz, who shared his most nuanced piece yet, and Hidhawk, who opens and closes the album with two different moods, do so with completely new tracks.
Representing newcomers that are already leaving their mark, Sunnesther continues her plunderphonic explorations, mixing hip-hop beats and shoegazy guitars, and Gabriel de la Mora's 4-track minimalism takes a new turn with the addition of a piano, whose faint line haunts us throughout the entire song.
It is also with great joy that we present the debuting track from Tijuana's tape-manipulator AV Godoy, in which she blends an amorphous and urgent pulse with textures that spiral outwards and inwards creating a kaleidoscopic piece that will inspire both intrigue and melancholy.
While other tracks belong to existing works, this doesn't diminish their place on this compilation. Tokyo Eye's "Lumbre en mi lumbago" -taken from their 2003 debut- injects the raw unhinged energy that only distorted guitars and fast drums can provide, while Supersadfish's oneiric techno piece contrasts with 1MFS' droning, dirty guitar minimalism.
The idea behind MASS+VOLUME is not to present a "best of" or "our favorite artists" to the world, but to expand the ways in which we promote new and daring music that might get overlooked for not conforming to a certain image or current trends.
